Painting 1: Looking Out; Assignment 4, Project: Working From Drawings and Photographs

Exercise: Squaring up.

In this exercise I applied the method of « squaring up » which can be used to create precise allocation of the subjects  and their details in the composition. I have found a very good tutorial about why this method is important and helpful for artists. These are 2 tutorials on YouTube made  by B.Cole « Squaring  up to draw accurately » and « Art – Drawing -Squaring up #2 »; Another tutorial on YouTube « Square Drawing Grids, How to draw with Square Drawing » by Colin Bradley School of Art ».

Below is my drawing from the photograph when I sued the square grid.

Exercise: Working from a photograph

Below os my another work for this exercise – working from a photo.

The photo and the drawing from it below:

It was very interesting to compare the photo and the final outcome of my drawing. I like the result because I think I managed to recreate the sunrise house mood.

While working on my painting I deliberately did 3 things:

  1. I gave more space to the sea and didn`t angle the horizon line. On the painting I made the horizon line straight because I was not sure it would look great if copy the angle as it was on the photo;
  2. I enlarged the land mass on the left side because I wanted to bring more detail on it like 2 pine trees on top of the small island. I thought if I would copy the land it would look worse on the painting, appearing too small and as something which have not been finished.
  3. I was fascinated by the new moon in the sunrise sky and I made it larger on the painting;
