Painting Two. Part Five. Project 2

Parallel project

Exercise 2: Reflective exercise

As I have been progressing through my course and doing Part Five of the Painting Two, I have discovered more new possibilities about how can I do my Parallel Project. My understanding of what should be done and what I could do as my Parallel Project has changed under what I have learned in Part Four and Five of the painting Two courses.

I have sketches and trials of some ideas in my earlier post, those ideas were still lives. But, today, I think I should take a different direction, and I am thinking of working with a text. I work on two phrases below:

“QANTAR. SEN ÜSHIN“. It is translated as “JANUARY. IT WAS FOR/BECAUSE OF YOU”. This phrase is related to the epochal month of January 2022 in the history of the Qazaq people. After 30 years of the autocratic and dictatorial regime of Nursultan Nazarbayev in Kazakhstan, we have witnessed a heroic social protest, which led to the fall of Nazarbayev’s regime. It cost us more than 200 lives of peaceful civilians (including children) who were brutally gunned down by pro-Government forces.

Below are my sketches and a final outcome (I put first). I used A3 size paper from my sketchbook from Canson, trying different mediums such as black pigment ink pen from UniPin; a black pencil Pierre Noire HB from Conte a Paris; black acrylic ink in carbon black from Liquitex; Japanese aquarelle set Tambi;

I started with collages and my writing of the words. First I painted the phrase in black ink, then adding a Qazaq ornament in powerful red colour. The ornament at the base of the painting signifies the ethnicity, ancestral idealogy, and a connection between generations. It was also a symbol of support every young next-generation receives from their ancestors.T hen I developed my idea further, painting rare tulip flowers – “Tulip Greigii,” which are one of the most ancient types of tulips in the world, originating from Qazaq land. After that, I connected all elements: flowers, letters and the ornament with fresh green stems to symbolise the history of the nation’s development, where black and dramatic periods are always present. We have our foundation, we have hope and aspirations, and there is a struggle to achieve them.

Another idea for Parallel Project.

For this project I gave a title as : Too late questions …..

I have decided to make it in hand writings as it would be a letter to someone. Thoughts put in a way, which reminds somebody’s handwriting in the letter. I used A3 size paper from Canson and ink pens from UniPin;
