Painting 1: Personal Development; Different ways of applying paint;

Exercise: Impasto

In this exercise we were required to explore the impasto technique using 3 different means of applying the paint: using a brush, a knife and a sharp ended object to practice the scrabbling – sgraffito technique. We were required to a paint a simple still life. I found in my kitchen 2 very ripen bananas and an apple. Bananas came out as a perfect object to experiment with impasto. Below are my 2 paintings for this exercise and I find the right one as very interesting, which actually reminds a famous banana print by Andy Warhol (1928-1987), however I didnt have any intentions to follow Warhol`s idea about the banana print, I was just doing my impasto exercise. Below you can find the photos of my work in progress.

I have made the impasto gel as DIY thing watching the «  how to » tutorial in YouTube. I followed the recopie and mix & part of PVA glue and 1 part of baby powder. Then I added this mixture to my acrylic paints from Sennelier. I used the multi-techniques paper from AMT.

I found the process as very creative and engaging. Basically, working with impasto technique you work not only as a painter but as a sculptor as well. I tried to sculpt the lines of fruits and banana`s lines do come out nicely with large brush strokes. The thickening gel and the paint dry quite quickly staying as nice creative texture. Probably I will do one of out of 3-5 works for the final assignment with impasto. I think imparti would work nicely for still life or decorative panels with ornaments, or portraits.
Below is my collage with by banana pairing, inspired by Warhol’s artworks.
