Painting 1, Assignment 4: Looking Out; Research Point: Eerie, Dream like Landscapes of Surrealists

Below are my paintings for this exercise which was about an emphasis on creating mood and atmosphere. I used my aquarelle set by Senellier and the aquarelle paper by Canson;

The first painting I did from the photo I made several years ago when I had a chance to visit Maldives. In this work I used different shades of blue; green and some brown colours with white touch ups. First I did the wash for the sky part. I did the clouds using the technique of creating them with a soft paper tissue working on still wet blue paint with light touch ups which lift the pigment leaving the white patches which are the clouds. I think I did well with this painting because my mood was uplifted while working. Tropical sceneries do uplift the mood owing to their palette from light blue to turquoise.

Below is my another study of the seascape where I wanted to create a totally different mood and atmosphere to above; I used the same materials. I painted from my memory of the sea shore and overall composition, including the plant. I made a greyish  wash for the sky and the water reflecting the tone of the sky. The mood appears to me as gloomy but soft.

Two different moods: optimistic and lively versus gloomy and apathetic, blue and turquoise versus grey and dark green;

Below is my another work about bringing the mood and atmosphere.

I did this painting out of my memory of autumn trees in the park. I brought the main focus on the thin, flexible and tender stems and branches on the open cloudy sky. I think it looks fresh and cold.
