Painting 1/Assignment 3: Portrait and Figure; Project: Observing the human figure;

Exercise 1: Drawing the human figure

Below were my drawings and sketches for this exercise of drawing the human figure. For some of my sketches I could use some time  during waiting for the beginning of judo and ballet  class; I did these sketches in pencils.

The sketches above I did observing my kids playing with ballons.

Exercise 2: Linear figure study

For this study I asked my friend to pose for me laying on the couch and sitting in the arm chair under a standing light.

Below are the photos of my study of Michelle`s figure.

Exercise 3: Tonal figures study

Below are my sketches of 2 figures under an artificial light and sun light – a woman with a coffee cup. The sketches are done in pencil and ink.

In my studies of human figures above I aimed to developed my skills to draw good proportions, trying to observe as much as I can. I must confess that figurative drawing is not very appealing to me. Probably because it is much more complex sub genre: it is much easier to paint fruits and bowls rather than human figures and faces. Anyone`s perception of any human figure is very difficult to interpret: to be inspired you have to get an idea, but any human is such a complex object to our conciseness, so it takes a lot of thinking to find and understand the idea. Also it is usually not the one! Idea, definitely there are so many ideas evoke around and about one person. I feel myself really lost and helpless so far when I have to draw human`s figure. The drawings above are clearly just studies, they dont have lot of ideas behind them, I was just practising to bring a decent image of human figure with more or less good proportions.
