Today I post my project of the last week which was a still life with pomegranates. Below is my final work, photos of my pomegranates and my work in progress.
At this point of the course we must continue to work on further « ….understanding of colour, tone, composition and the development of your technique in your chosen medium ».
Thus I continued to work on still life, developing my composition skills, observation skills and my oil painting technical skills. I picked up 2 pomegranates and tried to allocate them in different ways – photos below, thinking whether i should paint 1, 2 or three fruits, how to bring the light and what could be the background. I had no doubt that I should place them on white porcelaine dish because it outlined their colour and texture. Also I liked how shadows came to the white plate around the fruits – it was complex shadow with tones within it.

For this project I used water soluble oil paints for beginners and a special paper for oil painting. I decided to paint the pomegranates of different sizes placed on my white porcelaine dish because white, smooth surface of the plate worked well with their rich colours and texture. Even though I had just three objects to paint, I spend a good amount of time to finish the project because the surfaces of the fruits and the porcelaine dish were complex: they contained lot of tones and colours within. The smooth white porcelaine surface had lot of greyish and blueish tones because if was reflecting the light. Even though I cleaned up the space around it to avoid any unnecessary reflections and shadows, it still was reflecting a lot, I would say it was still very much absorbing the surroundings.
The pomegranates`surface was a real fun to paint. I wanted to bring out onto the paper their multi toned colour and rich texture, so i used a textured kitchen paper towel working over the paints. The overall result is satisfactory. At least they dont look boring.
