Assignment 4/Self Portrait and Portrait

This is my self portrait – “Me in a bath towel”. I derived  this idea for my self portrait after doing an exercise – “study your own head” earlier. I also post here my self portrait I did  earlier in ink. My bath towel portrait is done in HB pencil. People say they can recognise me on both images. I post here my self portrait I did earlier for previous exercise because I want to share my observation.   I liked to do portraits in ink more than in HB pencil, because ink doesn’t give this tired look and allows to work on shading and tones, giving dimension to the face while HB pencil, I found, even though I did shades keeps the image some kind of flat. This is, of course, is very much related to my technical skills which are not that developer yet. I experimented with filters with my ink self portrait which I cut out from my previous excercises. The original is on the right hand side.

October, 2018. My tutors feedback about my self portrait in ink was very positive; However I did another portrait drawing for this assignment. This is a portrait of my 7 years old daughter  Nicole. I used dry pastels by Jexwell and coloursoft skintones pencils by Derwent.  People can recognise Nicole, I think I did not bad; I have to work more on how to draw better noses. Nicole was wearing a white t shirt, but I changed it for pink because the pink  pastel  stick I had in my set was really good and I thought that this colour will emphasise the mood of the portrait. As a background  i decided to draw Qazaq ornaments  in red and brown colours to emphsise her very Qazaq facial features. Ornaments symbolise ancestor`s  and parental support every child needs. For this project I used A4 size paper for pastel drawing, dry pastels set by Jaxell and coloursoft skintones pencils by Derwent.
