Assignment 4/Project 1: Fabric and Form/ Exercise 1: Drawing fabric using line and tone

Yesterday I started working towards my 4th Assignment. I start with Project one which is about drawing fabric. In exercise 1 we are required to “throw a piece of clothing or  a length of a plain fabric”. We must do the exercise drawing the folds, using the line only and for some sketches concentrating on the tone.

I used a table napkin and a small  cotton T-shirt. One napkin ( the yellow one on the photo belo)  was  made with very shiny fabric, so it required a lot of shading, however it was very interesting though challenging, since it contained so many shades not only at folding places. To make myself more challenged    I decided to fold the white napkin in 2 different way, so I could produce more different sketches and I threw the yellow napkin without “structuring” it as I did with white one. I really enjoyed the work, because I liked the effect of volume which  starts to appear after  good shading  of different intensity on the image. For drawing I used my  “I love  art”  pencils set by Gerstaecker. I particularly used pencils 8B,6B which were soft enough to work on creating soft folds of the fabric. One napkin I did with 2H pencils. I used A4 size drawing  paper for each piece to draw  because I wanted to have enough space for myself to draw all the shades, I think I couldn’t do better if I would  decide to draw the objects in a smaller size. Below are my sketches.
