Today I post my ink drawing of my favourite tree so far – the Platan tree in winter. Indeed this tree is very inspiring to me: while I was drawing it in pencils, I was already thinking how I will draw it in ink. It somehow felt very “inky” to me because of its natural very graphical shape and overall structure. Painting it with ink really looked and felt like painting Chinese or Japanese characters. I think I managed well with overall shape and branches, however I struggled with painting texture and shades of the stem. I tried different strokes and shades of great and black. Obviously working with ink to draw a stem of the tree is more difficult comparing to pencil work. I left some of the stems as very black to accentuate the natural graphic property of this tree. Some stems from right side I shaded in gray and black trying to get as close as I could to platan’s natural pattern on it’s stem. I also tried to add a sun light from right side, painting stem’s skin in different pattern and shade. I used just black “sumi” ink. Below is my drawing in progress.
I have developed my Platan tree into further drawing trial which I named as a “Winter Platan tree awaits for a spring”. I used blue Indian ink to paint sky.
